MCW: Best Buddy Movie
It's the best movie i've seen in years. It's an unusual buddy combo, but it is exactly that. The dynamic between Vincent (Tom Cruise) and Max (Jaime Foxx) flows very naturally. It's the only movie where I've actually liked tom cruise other than his cameo as les grossman in Tropic Thunder. (And if you havent seen that dance, you really need to que up the last 4 minutes / credits of tropic thunder) The soundtrack is spectacular, if only for the inclusion of "Spanish Key" by Miles Davis, which i recently treated Moi and Boxer to while speeding toward the ATL superhub. But theres a million great tracks from Groove Armada to Audioslave. AND it was directed by Micheal Mann. And there was this quote that I loved:
while Max (Foxx) freaks out over the first target Vincent (Cruise) hits, this conversation follows:
Max: I can't drive you around while you're killing folks. It ain't my job!
Vincent: Tonight it is.
Vincent: Okay, look, here's the deal. Man, you were gonna drive me around tonight, never be the wiser, but El Gordo got in front of a window, did his high dive, we're into Plan B. Still breathing? Now we gotta make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, Darwin, shit happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it.
Here's a delightful clip coming in at an economical 34 seconds!
This movie gets a 5 rottie howl rating. happy MCW!

Good evening K9,
Concise and to the point. I haven't seen it, but I'm may.
Miles Davis I wouldn't plug him in on my own, I could listen to him any time.
Have a happy clip day!
I saw this a while ago, but remember thinking that Tom Cruise has never been better. Michael Mann is one of those directors where even his worst stuff is still good. His best stuff is off the charts great.
Thanks for the intro to Spanish Key. It ended my lifelong fatwa on jazz. Utterly stunning piece of music.
Delightful isn't the word that came to my mind when watching this.... I think it is in the "Tom Cruise wanting to get beyond pretty boy status" kind of movie?
pam: i was kidding about the charming. out of context this seems excessively violent - those guys who were shot had just finished some major league thuggery on the Foxx character -so that shooting is somewhat satisfactory. its a good movie
moi: what do you the the best MM movie is? the insider is good. miles...you really have to have the proper setting for that. it doesnt work at chickory lol
karl: see comment to pam - its not just senseless violence...it has some real tension to it and suspense.
happy MCW all!
I liked The Insider, too, mainly for Russell Crowe's performance. But I still think Mann's best movie is Thief (James Caan, Tuesday Weld). The atmospheric The Keep is good, too. For someone who's been around as long as he has, he really should make more movies.
Iremember wanting to see this movie. Getting closer to a netflix membership.
i liked tom cruise in ..... errrrr ...... can't remember .....
oh! i can't remember because i've never really bothered watching him in anything ...
this might be promising though.
whyn't ya post them last few moments too? The dance ya mentioned?
I forgot Spanish Key!
Trouble wif' TC is, uh, I cain't git past the Scientology stoooopidity.
great movie. great cathartic violence.
i suppose cruise could have spent the time to discuss the issue with the two homies and worked toward bringing them to tears and realising the net harm th ier actions had in this and other situations they had found themselves in..and i suppose it would have been the beginning of a new life for those two...
ah fuck it, shoot em.
and while we`re at it, bring back clint.
"a man`s gotta know his limitations".
This clinches it: I'm becoming a Scientologist after all.
