Oh! NOW I see where this came from. ;-) I love these. Especially love the Sisters picture but also the number of children BRAVE enough to sit with their pits.
I think those dogs are babysitters. see how many depression photos there are? Im pretty sure those dogs were watching the children half the time. if those dogs were actually the way they are portrayed now -no way youd see all those wee chiles with them. its the gangsta culture that ruined what was the quintessential american dog.
Moi said they were called "Nanny Dogs" so you're right. Wow. I had no idea. I love pits and there will be one in my future.... you know, when I don't have SO MANY. :-) Remember that puppy we saw on the Island that the rescue dog lady had? *sigh* Beautiful dog.
I'm amazed at how little the dog's looks have changed in nearly 100 years. I still see pitties who look just like the ones in these photos--whether "classically" conformed pits, big cross-bred lugs, or little petite puggish pocket pits. And their temperament, in spite of all the thuggery shenanigans, remains more rock solid than just about any other breed. A dog I still feel confident in recommending as a supreme family pet.
This reminds me, I'm thinking of giving my twin granddaughters reticulated pythons for their next birthdays.

My dad had a little black staff terrier. the "land shark" we called her. Bebe was her real name. Loved her, picked her up in south georgia for my dad and damn near refused to hand her over. she wouldve been happier with me. she had the widest head you ever saw and the classic smile. damn movie star.
We'll be looking for a little "land shark" for Maddie when Ivan eventually passes along. Staffies are super cool and compactly packaged. But I love the breed mostly because of that damn smile. Wide like the side of a bus and full of joy and mischief.
